Truby knows his subject well to provide concrete examples supporting his arguments, questions to consider for each element presented, and things that guide the writer along in their work. From there, he moves into character, emphasizing the importance of not only the hero but also the characters in the story who aid and oppose him.

In theory, I could see why that would be a good idea. What truly sets it apart is the in-depth look at character connections, as well as how to connect each of these to your theme.

But there is no 22 step program to become a master storyteller here. It’s a how-to guide basically, for people who want to be writers particularly screenwriters. A better writer wouldn’t have picked on Mark Twain as a negative example. See all customer images. Truby’s book, by comparison, dives deeper and speaks more clearly and to the point than anything else I’ve ever read. Use sticky tabs, because you’re going to end up referring to it over and over again while you work. If you are interested in mastering the craft of writing, then this book should be in your library.
I think it’s fairly non-controversial to say “Huckleberry Finn” is widely acknowledged as a great book. This approach didnt feel like it covered everystory. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in writing!
It will be an indispensable guide to writing your first antomy script. So far I would say this has some interesting ideas in it. You know that old saying that writers are either pantsers or plotters? The pages are littered with story breakdowns, concepts, and techniques.
More so, this book is about development, about the process each character, idea, plot point and so on must undertake to reach its finality, as Truby’s anatony point is to help you develop your story organically, from its internal logic, rather than from exterior constraints such as three-act structure or plot requirements.
